Hot Water Cylinder Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve.

My last blog was on a Hot Water Cylinder (HWC) cold water expansion valve (CWEV).

Connected to the relief drain along with the cold water expansion valve, is a temperature and pressure relief valve. This is located at the top of the HWC. It operates independently of temperature and pressure, like the CWEV it is factory set, due to this no maintenance can be carried out on the valve. This is valve will operate if the CWEV fails. If the HWC is hidden the signs will be a hot spot under the floor where the relief drain is run and hot water discharging from the relief drain. The manufacturer of these valves recommends that the spring is eased every 6 months to test that it is working correctly. This can be done by lifting the handle on top of the valve and allowing it to discharge for a few seconds. If the valve continues to run after this has been done, then try lifting the valve handle again to see if it will clear the seating.
