Mixer Tap Cartridge

Most modern day mixer taps and shower mixers have a cartridge.

The mixer cartridge has three orifices, one for the hot water in, one for the cold water in and the last one a mixed supply out. When you turn the lever handle to hot it closes off the cold and likewise to cold closes the hot. This is how the temperature is regulated at the spout. A standard cartridge will fit most mixer taps and is a relatively quick replacement. However, the amount of choice on the market and foreign manufacturers supplying to NZ, this is not always the case. Some cartridges may have to be sourced from a specific manufacturer and in most of these cases it is more cost effective to replace the tap. I do recommend NZ manufacturers for this very reason, as parts are readily available and somewhat cheaper.
