Pipe Insulation

Insulating pipe work is essential to prevent freezing.

On modern houses with a concrete slab, the water pipe work is run in the loft space. Generally its placed underneath the pink batts, which is part of the thermal envelope of the building and protects the pipe work from freezing. On occasion where the pipe work is outside the thermal envelope, ie above the garage, it should be insulated. I have repaired many pipes because of freezing and from experience it may only be a small part of the pipe that is exposed. When water freezes it has an expansion of 10% and will split the pipe leaving a sizeable hole. The good news is it’s easy to check yourself. If you can see bare pipe work I thoroughly recommend you get it insulated.
